Does your immune system need a boost?

When I still had IBS, my immune system was really low. I just kept picking up colds, or whatever bug was going around.  With Covid, it is more important than ever to boost your immune system. But traditional meds can be difficult to digest. Did you know that essential oils can boost your immune system?

Why your IBS immune system may be under par

Poor digestion is often part of the reason. Getting the vitamins and minerals your body needs is impaired when you have IBS and badly digest trigger foods.

And as the gut constitutes a major part of our immune system, any imbalance in gut bacteria (SIBO and Candida, for example) can also be reducing your ability to fight off colds and viruses.

But what can you do WHILE you get your digestion sorted? Here’s how I boosted my immune system while I still had IBS.

IBS: Boost your immune system with essential oils

I came across the power of plants (aromatherapy) when looking for a boost that I did not have to swallow and attempt to digest.

The advantage of using essential oils topically is that you don’t have to swallow and digest them for them to be effective.

The downside is that they have a smell to them.

Good quality oils are 100% natural and organic. You can buy them can buy at your local chemist or health shop.

If you need to buy online, which could well be the case during Covid, stick to well known quality brands such as Rocky Mountain Oils (US) or Puressentiel (Europe). These brands also offer expert blends of essential oils.

Most essential oils can be inhaled or massaged into the skin. However, many can irritate the skin if used pure and should be used with a neutral carrier oil, such as coconut oil.

If you need to boost your immune system but you have IBS, I particularly recommend essential oils of Ravintsara and Niaouli.

How I used essential oil of Ravintsara:

IBS and essential oilsRavintsara does not irritate the skin, so you can apply it to the skin neat. If you have very sensitive skin apply a drop to a small test area first, or apply using a carrier oil.

I find Ravintsara is a particularly good tonic for your immune system if you have physical or psychological fatigue. And let’s face it, this is often the case with IBS.

As soon as I had the slightest sign of oncoming cold or flu, or if I felt run down, I dabbed a couple of drops on the glands either side of the neck, on my solar plexus (below the diaphragm) and inside my wrists.

You can repeat this three times a day for up to 5 days, and it generally staves off any illness.

How I used essential oil of Niaouli: Inhalation

Niaouli has great antiviral, antiseptic and anti-fungal properties. I used it as soon as I felt the first symptoms of a cold, such as a sore throat.

Pour 3 to 5 drops of essential oil of niaouli into a bowl of hot water. Inhale for ten minutes.

Warning: Use of essential oils

Essential oils are natural but contain high levels of some substances and may interfere with any medication you are taking.

Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, are allergic to one of the components or have epilepsy.

Generally, essential oils are not for use with children under 12 years old. However, this can vary depending on the oil.
