If you started 2026 bogged down with IBS flares, know that you are not alone. The majority of IBS sufferers are going through this too.
That is how I used to start every year. I would inevitably have post-Christmas IBS flare-ups, and then catch whatever was going around. It would take me most of January to recuperate.
Just when others are posting up their new goals and 10-mile run every day, you are just trying to get through the day. You wonder if you are on the same planet!
Starting the New Year in this way can feel soul-destroying. But all is not lost!
The value of baby steps with IBS

Instead of resolutions, I developed another way forward: Baby steps
No big demanding leaps (no energy for those!)
No major New Year’s resolutions.
Just the next small step I could take.
Following these 3 golden rules:
1) No pushing or forcing. I didn’t attempt anything during an IBS flare, or if I was sick. I did my best to rest and give my body some space.
2) No getting swallowed up with frustration if you miss a step. Instead of feeling frustrated that I had missed the boat AGAIN (it was a regular theme back then), I got back on track as soon as I could.
3) No hyperfocusing. I had a general direction of “looking after myself and my health”. And took any baby step I felt would get me closer to that goal.
What baby steps can you take right now?

Baby steps can be about allowing yourself some down time, with more self-care and connection.
Exit screens. Enter real rest, gentle play or light cosy fun for 10 minutes a day.
What will you do with those 10 minutes? Absolutely nothing? Cuddle the cat? Close your eyes and feel? Stare blankly at your pot plant? Or something slow and creative that you don’t have to get right?
What would you like to use those 10 minutes for that you don’t usually – because in your mind you have too much to do? (We can all relate to that one!)
Here are some ideas of baby steps that can support you through your IBS, and keep you heading in the right direction.
Why even bother taking baby steps?
Because they help you slide out of the passive role you may feel with your doctor, to one of ACTION.
Once you get used to allowing yourself some down time with more self-care and connection, it becomes a habit.
But if that feels like tto much right now, please don’t make yourself wrong. Use those 10 minutes to do what feels good to you.
Baby steps are ultimately a path to YOU calling the shots with IBS
Yes, this approach takes time. But it creates forward motion and supports your desire for change.
So forget January and the holiday aftermath. When you’re ready, decide on your baby step for next month.
Here’s to a happier and healthier New Year for you – even if it starts in February!
